Energy Minister DK Shivakumar plans out for a new gas based power plant at Yelahanka

Honorable Energy Minister and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah plans out to build a new gas power plant in Yelahanka. The city may not have power cut problems like before in 2018. As, the new gas based power plant project coming up in Yelahanka soon.

According to the reports, 350MW gas based power plant for Karnataka is being set up in Yelahanka which will reduce the future technical problems of Udupi and Ballari thermal power plant respectively.
Speaking to the media on March 2, Energy Minister DK Shivakumar has said, the 350 MW gas based power station at Yelahanka will start functioning in next two months. The total cost of the project has come up to Rs 1,650 crores. He made an announcement about the Yelahanka gas based power plant during the inguration of the renovated Sharavathy hydro power plant.

After laying the foundation for the Statea��s first ever gas based power plant in Yelahanka, the State Government has considered to extent the project by setting up a second unit. Addressing the press meet DK Shivakumar added, a�?We are thinking of a second unit, but the focus will be on quick completion of the first unita�?.

The KPCL (Karnataka Power Corporation Limited) has considered a proposal to convert the existing defunct diesel-generating station at Yelahanka into a gas based one. However, the proposal will involve dismantling of the existing diesel-generating set and replacement of the engines and the expected cost is Rs 1, 570 crore and the gas will be supplied by GAIL.

Meanwhile, the gas based power plant is built on the premises of the now-defunt diesel-based power generation plant.

Though the residents in the neighborhood of Yelahanka went on a protest to stop the construction of 350 MW gas based power plant. They blamed the mega gas based power plant to be potential toxic impact on lakes, human beings and animals.

Reacting to the same, Minister DK Shivakumar clarified that, the project has already acquired all the clearances from the Ministry of Environment, Airport Authorities, Health and Family Welfare Departments which states there will be no harm to the domestic life of the people due to Yelahanka gas based power plant.
